The diary records the march of the 7th Infantry, under the command of Col. Gibbons, from Fort Shaw to join Gen. Terry's campaign against the Sioux in the Yellowstone country, noting places, distances, road conditions. It recounts the news of Custer's defeat and describes the march to the site and burying the dead, the rescue of Maj. Reno, and the return to Fort Shaw.

William L. English, born in Jacksonville, Illinois, served as 1st Lt. of Co. I, 7th United States Infantry, during the Indian campaigns. James H. Bradley was born in Sandusky County, Ohio, on May 25, 1844. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Bradley joined a volunteer Ohio regiment and served primarily in the Western Theater.
